United States' imperialism
During the 90's of the 19th century also the USA began his imperialistic policy, as a compensation for the loss of the internal frontier.
In 1898 the islands of Hawaii were annexed in the States, after more than twenty years of as many agreements as blackmails towards archipelago's rulers.
In the same year United States fought a short war against Spain in order to take possession on Cuba, Porto Rico and the Philipines and also to reduce the economic power of the european Nation, a direct rival for trading.
President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 obtained the lease of the Panama Canal Zone, thus enlarging the American territory with strategic position. His policy can be synthesized in the maxim: "Speak softly and carry a big stick".
The large industrial growth in United Stated attracted million of immigrants from the whole world, in particular italian , Jews and Irish peasant, who sought better living conditions.
The internal migration interested mainly the ex black slaves from the southern States, that, togheter with foreign immigrant, crowded the urban slums in the largest cities of the nation.
